The magic of Midwinter
When I walked through the fresh and new fallen snow in front of my little house I noticed something strange. Every time when I brushed the snow of the path and looked back, I saw new fresh snow lying on it. First I thought it came of the soles of my boots. Until suddenly, splash, I received a handful of snow right in my face. I looked around but saw no one who did this to me. And again, splash, this time the snow landed in the collar of my jack. I decided to play along and to suddenly turn around to see who was there, throwing the snow. In the corner of my eyes I saw a movement, I turned around to have a better look and again.....splash, a pile of snow on the back of my head again. Brrrr, cold melting snow dripped along my neck towards my back.
“Hey who is there” I yelled, “who is fooling me, show yourself if you dare”. Splash! This time a pile of snow landed on top of my head. Quickly I looked up and I saw a lovely tiny brown squirrel sitting on a branch. He looked at me with naughty black eyes. When he jumped onto a different branch another pack of snow felt down. Quickly I stepped aside but it almost hit me again. The squirrel kept looking at me and didn’t run away. It seemed as if he wanted me to challenge to catch him. “Well just wait and see” I thought. I made a little snowball, aimed and threw it to the squirrel. However, he was so clever and quick. He just jumped away, from branch to branch, over my head and yes, exactly what you thought...splash...another heap of snow landed in my neck.

He just jumped away, from branch to branch, over my head and yes, exactly what you thought...splash...another heap of snow landed in my neck.
This little squirrel was amazingly clever, so I decided to take another
chance. Again I made a snowball, this time a bigger one. And there it was, I
saw my opportunity to get even with him. “What he can do, I can do” I
thought. I threw the snowball as hard as I could just a little bit above the
squirrel. The squirrel didn’t move and looked at me like he was saying:
“Well well, your way of throwing a snowball isn’t quite good, isn’t it?”.
But what he didn’t see is that the snowball I threw, hit a branch, which was loaded with snow, and yes, it all fell down....just exactly on the head of the squirrel. He jumped and shivered, and shook all the snow from his fur. I laughed loudly.
Unexpectedly a snowball hit my back. I turned around to look where it came from. A second snowball hit my back and again I turned around to look where that one came from. And another one hit me, now on my side, and another one hit my legs, and another one and another one. The snowballs coming from all sides kept hitting me. I didn’t know where to hide, it was raining snowballs. “ Ok, Ok, Stop, please stop” I shouted, “I surrender to whoever you are, and you won the fight”.
When it stopped raining snowballs around my ears I looked up and there I saw standing a whole bunch of elves out of the forest. I stood up and walked to them. They were rolling over each other and laughed out really hard. So here we had the little naughty ones, six elves, all with red coats and blue caps. They had pink cheeks from the cold and the fun they had. I wanted to ask where they came from and what they were doing here, when suddenly I recognised one of the elves from one of the adventures with my friend Gnome Wrinklebeard. He also saw me and came forward. “ I would like to ask you if you would join us at our Midwinter party. Gnome Wrinklebeard has sent us to ask you because he himself is to busy with the preparations.” “Well that is very nice and I surely like that, but let me first grab my warm winter coat” I replied.
A few moments later we all walked through the forest. The squirrel jumped, in front of us, from branch to branch and I had to avoid several lumps of snow falling down. The elves only laughed and were very happy and excited.
After a while we arrived at the place where the elves were living, deep in the forest. I was brought to the centre of the village where I saw a huge Christmas tree. It was very clear that all the little gnomes and elves were still busy with the decoration of the tree. A beautiful silver white garland curled from one branch to the other. It was very clear that all the little gnomes and elves were still busy with the decoration of the tree. A beautiful silver white garland curled from one branch to the other. It looked like the hair of an angel! And
while thinking this a little elf appeared from behind a tree, flew to the
Christmas tree and hung her long long curly hair onto every branch of the
Christmas tree by flying around and around the tree. The look on my face
must have been so surprised that the elves around me started to laugh
again. Behind me, I heard Wrinklebeard saying:” Yes, yes, this is the magic
of Christmas and we are so happy to share this with you. This special day
we always start together as one big family. And as you can see, everyone is
working together to make this happen by decorating the forest”. In the
meantime the Elf had arrived at the top of the Christmas tree. She sat down
and looked around. Her hair was beautifully curled through the whole tree
and she looked very satisfied. Then she clapped her hands and from every
corner of the wood, all kind of different animals arrived bringing lovely
things for into the tree. I saw squirrels with pinecones, a snowbird with
twigs filled with red berries, a hedgehog with beechnuts, little white and
brown rabbits with crystal clear icicles, many many animals with a bit of
everything. I even saw animals, which normally should be having their mid-
winter sleep. And the Christmas tree became more and more beautiful, and
the Elves started to dance around the tree. More and more Elves arrived
who were taking place on the ends of the branches, oh so beautiful it was.
Also Sir Owl passed by, spreading his giant wings to land safely near the
tree. He brought a red apple. I heard him panting and puffing while he flew
to the tree. With the help of the Elves the apple was laid onto a branch. Ten
times he did that!! But where he found those apples...who knows, nobody
told me that. And the Christmas tree became more and more decorated.
What a majestic and wonderful tree.
“Just wait a little more and see what happens”, Wrinklebeard said.
At the same moment the Elf at the top of the tree clapped her hands again,
two times this time. Everyone was looking at a spot deep into the forest,
and there something appeared what I probably will never forget.
Between the trees of the dark forest hundreds of little warm white light went on, and everything was lighted in a very beautiful fairy-tale way.
The lights were moving and came our way. When they arrived at the open centre near the Christmas tree, I saw all these fireflies. They all found a place in the Christmas tree, from top till bottom, between all the decorations. It looked like the tree became alive. There he stood, in the snow, full of light and colour. Everyone looked at the tree with a smile of luck and love.
I just wanted to ask Wrinklebeard what was to happen now. He answered with a finger onto his lips and a quite “Ssssjt” . I quickly shut my mouth and looked around to see what it was where we were waiting for. And while

standing there, I noticed that I wasn’t cold at all. However, the icicles in the
tree weren’t melting either, so it must be freezing. “Hmmmm” I thought, “
that I need to ask later”.
And then I suddenly heard an enchanting and wonderful music. It was so enchanting that I got goose bumps. I looked around where it came from and saw the Elf at the top of the Christmas tree playing a flute. The sounds coming from the flute were pure magic, and I could almost see it whirling along the tree into the woods.
I stood there looking and listening as if I was bewitched. Suddenly Wrinklebeard poked me in my side. He pointed at a path that went deep into the woods. I saw everyone looking at this path as if they were expecting something to happen. However, nothing special was seen there and I looked back to the Elf at the tree, who was still playing the flute.
Until very suddenly, a very heavy boom was heard, as if somebody played a big drum: “ Boom....Boom....Boom....Boom “.
The sound became louder and louder and the ground begun to vibrate on it. And there, on the path, a very big and stately figure appeared. Sure he was twice as big as us and he wore a beautiful white coat with fur on the sides. His boots were brown just like his pants, which were put into the boots. A big heavy belt, with a silver buckle in the shape of a pine cone, held his pants on its place. Under his coat I could see a red vest, and on his head he wore a silver white crown with five pins. A white snowball was picked on every pin. A big golden ring, with a dark red sparkling stone in it, graced his left hand. It looked like the stone was illuminating the area.
His right hand held a little staff with a star on the top.
He stopped at the place where we were standing and he looked around. It was so quite then. He looked at the Elves and then he saw me. He gazed at me for a while and suddenly he winked with his eye. I exhaled deeply. I didn’t notice holding my breath all the time. At last the man turned around and looked at the tree. He raised his arm with the staff and made a quick movement with it, like throwing a ball. A silver white glistening beam came out of the staff, which was directly pointed to the top of the tree. Halfway the tree the beam changed into a star, which was floating through the air. A few times the star circled around the top of the tree, and landed there. It stayed just on the very top of the tree radiated the most beautiful light I have ever seen.

Suddenly all Elves threw their hats in the air and shouted together:” Hurray
for King Winter, Hurray for King Winter”. So this was King Winter, the one I
heard so many stories about. I wanted to greet him but he came already our
way with a big and bright smile on his face. He stopped at Wrinklebeard,
bended over to him and said: “ Well done well done, you guys done it again
and I am proud of you all”. And when he looked at me he said: “And I am
completely honoured with your visit here and now”. I didn’t know what to
say back. “Yes”, King Winter continued, “it is very important that someone
from the human world can attend this kind of celebrations. They can bring
our Christmas messages and blessings home to their world, and spread it in
a way that everyone can understand. So please write your story about what
you felt and what you have seen and heard here. Let it read to everyone
who wants to read it. What you see here is togetherness, help each other
where necessary, and make fun whenever you can, just like you saw when
everyone was decorating the tree. And yes, in answer to your question, you
get a warm feeling of that, like an inner glowing, despite the fact that it is
still freezing with snow and icicles around”.
King Winter raised himself and shouted with a loud voice: “Merry Christmas to you and everyone”. On that, all Elves started to party, a party that lasted very long to deep in the morning. I really don’t know how I went home but when I woke up in my bed I heard the bells ringing.... It is Christmas!!!!!!
